Would you like to have an extra four hours a day? Who wouldn’t?
Time management is something that everyone must master. Whether you are an employee, a stay-at-home mom, or an entrepreneur, when you don’t have enough time, you won’t achieve your goals, you won’t feel fulfilled. In this post you will learn 4 strategies to master time.
Let me start by saying that time cannot be managed. The whole term “time management” is an oxymoron. We cannot manage time. We all have 24 hrs in a day. What we can manage though is the activities which we engage in throughout the day. By managing our activities we become more productive. I came up with an acronym called E.P.I.C. to help you remember the 4 strategies which I am about to unveil. At the end of the day, we all want to be EPIC at whatever it is that we do. So let’s get to it!
E stands for Early start. This sounds counterproductive, but it works! Start getting up before everyone else does. I am talking about the 5am club. Most people will hate this, but it is just another habit which you can create. If you want to be EPIC, you have to do EPIC stuff. If you want to have something that others don’t have, you gotta do something other’s don’t do. When you get up early, you not only get that extra time to yourself, you also get peace and quiet, you can accomplish more. In addition, you get that one or two extra hours when you are fresh and not exhausted by the rest of the day. If you tackle the hardest things first, you gain a momentum, and the rest of your day you will be even more productive.
P stands for Plan in advance. I never start my day without knowing what I want to accomplish that day. Plan the night before, in writing. This is a very simple strategy, yet it is so powerful. When you wake up in the morning, you don’t think about what to do, you have the whole plan in front of you. Also, batch some of the activities you do. For example, instead of checking your emails throughout the day, start checking them twice a day, mid-morning and in the afternoon. At the end of each week, plan your next week. So, plan in advance – it’s a game changing concept.
I stands for Inspiration. Find your inspiration. It is so much easier to make things happen when you’re inspired, when you have a purpose. Your inspiration could be your family. All you are doing then is creating a better quality of life for them. Your role model could be your inspiration. No inspiration equals no passion. And without passion, life is just boring. Inspiration helps you identify your priorities. Clarify your priorities, clarify goals. Put them on your vision board. Post some motivational prints on your vision board as well to help you stay focused.
C stands for Cut the nonsense. What do I mean here? You can’t complain you don’t have enough time when you spend hours watching TV. The average person in North America watches more than 4 hours of TV every day! It’s a complete waste of your precious time. I’m not even mentioning what it does to your mind. You can’t complain you don’t have enough time when you check your phone every few minutes, when you mindlessly browse the internet. My main point here is eliminate distractions from your life. You can gain 4 hours a day just by following this advice alone. Sometimes we are not even aware of our distractions. There is a great App called Toggl Timer which you can use to track your activities. It can help you identify all the distractions you have throughout the day. Don’t allow distractions to ruin your life. Commit now to live the life on your terms.
To recap, if you want to find more time in your life, implement these four strategies. Getup early, plan your days in advance, find your inspiration, and finally cut the nonsense – eliminate distractions.
Dream big! Be epic! Make your life a masterpiece!
